Downtown Tulsa has a grocery store again for the first time in more than a decade.

Oasis Fresh Market held its ribbon-cutting Wednesday, Sept. 30, at 119 E. Sixth St., inside the ground floor of the ARCO apartment building at Sixth Street and Cincinnati Avenue. The 14,000-square-foot store is open daily from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m., KTUL reported.

It is the first full-service grocery store to open downtown since Folks Urban Market closed in 2014 after just seven months in business, according to the Oklahoma Eagle. Before that, Homeland Grocery at 11th Street and Denver Avenue closed around 2002.

"Our mission [is] to be a safe place shelter and bring safe and healthy access to all, no matter where you live, no matter what you look like, no matter how much money you make or don't make," founder and owner AJ Johnson said at the ribbon-cutting.

The store carries fresh produce, meats, sushi, Sugar Llama's donuts, fresh coffee and Simple Simons Pizza, according to Public Radio Tulsa. It also offers lunch specials, a fresh food bar, prepared meals and catering for local businesses.

Johnson surveyed more than 3,000 downtown residents about what they wanted in a neighborhood grocery, KJRH reported.

The downtown location is Oasis Fresh Market's fourth store, according to KTUL. Public Radio Tulsa reported that all of the company's locations are in areas classified as food deserts.

The opening came after 21 months of work. Johnson had originally planned to open in June, but building code requirements tied to the 75-year-old ARCO building and shipping delays caused by federal tariffs on European equipment pushed the timeline back, the Oklahoma Eagle reported.

Price Family Partnerships owns the ARCO building. Oasis owns the store and leases the retail space.
