Union High School's girls flag football team shut out McClain 28-0 on Wednesday, Sept. 30, to claim the first victory in program history.
The Redhawks earned the milestone on the road at SE Williams Stadium. Union Athletics announced the result on X, saying the team is building something and that the win will forever be part of the program's story.
The shutout caps a rapid rise for a program that did not exist in the spring. Union Athletics announced girls flag football on July 6, making Union one of the Tulsa area's newest entries in the fastest-growing high school sport in the country. Tryouts were held in mid-August at the UHS Track Field, open to female students in grades 9 through 12.
Luke Frazier leads the program as its first head coach. A former Oklahoma State wide receiver and team captain, Frazier is an NFL FLAG coach and holds USA Flag Football certification, according to Union Athletics' coaching announcement in August. The inaugural roster was set by Sept. 9.
The Redhawks played their first-ever home game earlier in September before hitting the road for Wednesday's contest at SE Williams Stadium. The 28-0 result gave the young squad its signature early-season moment.
Union's program joins a national surge. More than 102,000 girls played high school flag football in 2025-26, a 551% increase over four years, Axios reported Sept. 16, citing the National Federation of State High School Associations. Across the country, 3,990 schools reported participants, and 23 states plus Washington, D.C., now sanction it as an official varsity sport. The sport is also set to debut at the 2028 Olympics, and at least 40 NCAA schools already offer it at the collegiate level.
Union's full remaining schedule has not been published publicly, and the Redhawks' next game date has not been confirmed.
