A large fire at the North Tulsa Solid Waste Landfill on Aug. 10, required a multi-agency response and sent one firefighter to the hospital with a heat-related illness.

The blaze broke out near 56th Street North and Highway 75, also known as 5600 N. Harvard Ave. Firefighters from the Tulsa Fire Department, Turley Fire Department and Sperry Fire Department responded, according to News On 6.

The fire was in a heavily wooded, difficult-to-access area that created challenges for fire apparatus and water supply, News On 6 reported. Crews established hose lines while a dozer and UTVs helped them reach the fire and work toward containment.

By approximately 3:15 p.m., crews had knocked down the fire and began transitioning to overhaul operations.

The heat took a toll. One Sperry Fire Department firefighter was taken to a local hospital for evaluation and monitoring of a heat-related illness. The Tulsa area was in the middle of a heat wave with temperatures pushing into triple digits during the same period, according to News On 6.

Tulsa County Government said on X that county Highway crews were standing by that evening, ready to assist if requested, and that Emergency Management personnel had been on scene throughout the afternoon coordinating the response.

The cause of the fire has not been publicly identified.

As of an Aug. 11 update from News On 6, the fire had been contained but crews continued battling a deep-seated fire beneath the surface.
