A driver slammed into a Tulsa Police patrol car at the intersection of N. Lewis Avenue and 36th Street North on the night of Friday, Aug. 7, then fled into nearby woods with his passenger before both were tracked down by a police helicopter and K-9 unit, the Tulsa Police Department said.

The 30-year-old driver faces complaints of aggravated DUI, leaving the scene of an injury collision, transporting an open container, resisting and multiple traffic violations, according to TPD. His passenger, 28, was arrested on complaints of public intoxication and obstruction.

The crash happened around 11:48 p.m. when the driver, behind the wheel of a red Dodge Ram, turned left in front of a TPD officer traveling northbound on N. Lewis Avenue, TPD said on its verified X account. The driver did not slow down or attempt to avoid the collision, and the officer could not get out of the way despite trying to swerve.

The impact disabled the officer's patrol car. The Ram continued to the end of the intersection before stopping.

Both occupants ran.

They disappeared into the woods east of the intersection, prompting TPD to deploy its Air Support Unit, K-9 Unit and additional patrol officers to search the area. The department's helicopter guided K-9 Otis and his handler as they tracked the pair through the tree line. Otis located both suspects and held one of them until patrol officers arrived to make the arrests.

Back at the crash scene, officers found multiple open containers of alcohol inside the Ram.

The driver told officers he was coming from a party and showed several signs of intoxication, according to TPD. He was also driving without a valid license or insurance on the vehicle.

Both suspects were taken to a hospital to be medically cleared before being booked into the Tulsa County Jail. The complaints are arrests, not convictions, TPD noted.

The department did not disclose the officer's name or whether the officer was injured in the collision. TPD released details of the incident on Tuesday, Aug. 11.
