Lessie Benningfield Randle, the last known living survivor of the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre, is heading to Chicago to visit the Obama Presidential Center.
Randle, 111, is scheduled to arrive on Friday, Oct. 9, KTUL reported. She will spend three days in the Chicago area before receiving the Mighty Men & Women of God Humanitarian Award on Sunday, Oct. 11, in Cicero, Illinois.
The trip was Randle's idea. Larry Love, founder of Larry Love University who is helping organize the journey, told KTUL that Randle personally asked to visit the center.
"She said, 'Can I?' And I said, of course, you can. You're 111 years old. Who can say no to a 111-year-old lady that says, take me to see the Obama museum?" Love said.
Randle's granddaughter, LaDonna Penny, launched a GoFundMe campaign with a $3,500 goal to fund the trip. The group plans to travel by luxury RV, with a nurse and security personnel accompanying Randle on the drive from Tulsa.
Randle told supporters she wants to keep moving. "I want to travel, not just look at four walls," she said, according to the GoFundMe page.
Randle was 6 years old when the 1921 massacre devastated Tulsa's Greenwood District. In May 2021, she testified before a House Judiciary Subcommittee about her experiences during the attack.
Following the death of fellow survivor Viola Ford Fletcher in November 2025 at age 111, Randle is the last known living survivor of the massacre, according to the America’s Black Holocaust Museum. She is also recognized as the oldest living alumni member of Larry Love University.
The Obama Presidential Center, at 6001 S. Stony Island Ave. in Chicago, opened June 19. It drew more than 175,000 visitors from 50 states and 39 countries in its first 100 days, the Chicago Sun-Times reported.
The Sunday award ceremony in Cicero will also feature former world boxing champion "Lightning" Lonnie Smith and Ace Watkins of the R&B group Public Announcement, according to Larry Love University's website.
Randle's RV departs Tulsa ahead of her Friday, Oct. 9, arrival on Chicago's South Side.
