A 50-year-old man is in the Tulsa County Jail after police say he took a 1-year-old child from a woman's shopping cart inside a south Tulsa Walmart on Sept. 8.

Officers responded to a kidnapping report at the Walmart near 68th Street and Memorial Drive around 5:08 p.m., the Tulsa Police Department said on X. A woman told police she was shopping with her two children when a man approached and briefly talked about her kids. He then lifted her 1-year-old out of her cart, placed the child in his own shopping cart and started walking away, according to police.

The mother confronted the man and took her child back.

She then locked herself and her children in the store's bathroom to call for help, police said. Walmart staff removed the man from the building and called 911.

When officers arrived, they found a man matching the suspect's description sitting at a nearby bus stop. Asked about the reported abduction, the man told officers, "Yeah, I did that," according to the Tulsa Police Department.

Police identified the suspect as a 50-year-old man. He was arrested and booked into the Tulsa County Jail on a kidnapping complaint.

A booking complaint is not the same as a formal criminal charge. Prosecutors decide separately whether to file charges. As of Sept. 11, no formal charges or court dates had been announced in the case. The Tulsa Police Department noted in its statement that the arrest is not a conviction.

The incident unfolded during a busy time of day at one of south Tulsa's high-traffic retail locations. Multiple Tulsa-area news outlets, including KTUL, KJRH and KRMG, reported the arrest on Sept. 9 all citing the Tulsa Police Department as their source.
