A 3-year-old Tulsa boy shot himself in the leg Sept. 11 after finding a stolen gun in his father's bedroom, according to the Tulsa Police Department.

Officers responded around 4:51 p.m. to a fire station near 15th Street and 73rd East Avenue, where firefighters were already treating the child. Two men had carried the boy to the station seeking help, Tulsa Police said on X.

The boy survived. His injuries are believed to be non-life-threatening, police said. Firefighters treated him at the station until paramedics arrived and transported him to a hospital.

One of the two men was identified as the boy's father, 20-year-old Keilin Thompson. Thompson told officers the shooting happened at his home near 7th Street and 71st East Avenue, according to KFOR.

Thompson said he had placed his son in a bedroom where he kept a firearm, then stepped outside to take a phone call. Shortly after, he told police he heard a gunshot from inside the house. He went back in and found his son wounded, with the gun lying on the bed.

Thompson carried the boy to the nearby fire station himself before paramedics took over, according to KFOR.

Officers later went to the home and found the firearm still on the bed. The gun had been reported stolen out of Bartlesville, KJRH reported.

Thompson was arrested on charges of child neglect and knowingly concealing stolen property. No arraignment or court date had been announced as of Sept. 11.

The identity of the second man who brought the child to the fire station has not been released.
