An off-duty Tulsa County Sheriff's Office deputy shot a man who allegedly opened fire on him near East 41st Street and South Sheridan Road on Monday, Sept. 21.

The deputy was driving home around 12:37 p.m. when he spotted a man dodging in and out of traffic in the midtown corridor, TCSO Public Information Officer Casey Roebuck told KTUL. The deputy pulled over near Buffalo Wild Wings to check on the man, believing he might be concealing something under his shirt and trying to keep him from being struck by oncoming cars, Roebuck said.

The encounter escalated quickly.

"[The suspect] produced a firearm, shots are fired," Roebuck said. "We know we have at least a couple of shell casings from the suspect's gun and the deputy also fires his weapon."

The deputy was not injured. The man was struck and transported to a hospital with serious injuries at the time of transport, according to the sheriff's office. His condition had not been updated as of Monday. No bystanders were hurt.

An emergency "all-call" tone went out across area radios, drawing first responders from multiple agencies. East 41st Street was shut down between South Sheridan Road and I-44 while law enforcement secured the scene.

Tyler Byrd, an employee at Trident Collision Repair across the street, told News On 6 he heard about four shots. Byrd told KTUL he walked outside after hearing what he thought was a car backfiring. "As soon as I turned my head, the guy started turning his gun over here and that's when the cop laid him down," he said.

Bystander Mark Prestage, who was driving through the area when traffic stopped, told KTUL he had never seen that many first responders in one spot.

Administrators at nearby Bishop Kelley High School confirmed all students and staff were safe during the response.

The deputy was placed on paid administrative leave per Tulsa County Sheriff's Office (TCSO) policy. Detectives spent Monday afternoon interviewing witnesses and canvassing nearby businesses for security footage.

The sheriff's office had not released the names of the deputy or the man who was shot as of Monday. The investigation is ongoing, and no timeline for updates has been announced.
